When learning Italian, one of the first things you might want to know is how to ask questions. To start a question, we often use a question word, which is a special word we use to ask about where, what, how, etc.

Question structure
To ask a question using the question words, follow the patterns below.
Cosa, che cosa, che? + verb
- Cosa leggi? (What are you reading?)
- Che libro leggi? (What book are you reading?)
Dove + verb
- Dove vai in vacanza? (Where are you going on vacation?)
- Dove è Lucia? (Where is Lucia?)
Quando + verb + subject
- Quando arriva il treno? (When does the train arrive?)
Chi + verb
- Chi è l’insegnante? (Who is the teacher?)
- Chi parla? (Who is speaking?)
Careful: chi is always followed by a verb conjugated in the 3rd person singular.
Come + verb
- Come stai? (How are you?)
- Come hai viaggiato? (How did you travel?)
Perché + subject + verb (the subject is omitted if the subject is an object pronoun*)
- Perché (tu*) studi italiano? (Why are you learning Italian?)
- Perché Lucia ride? (Why is Lucia laughing?)
- Perché questo libro è il migliore? (Why is this book the best?)
A che ora + verb + subject
- A che ora parte il treno? (At what time does the train depart?)
- A che ora inizia la lezione? (At what time does the lesson start?)
Quale/Quali + noun + verb
- Quale libro preferisci? (Which book do you prefer?)
- Quali libri preferisci? (Which books do you prefer?)
Quale/i + verb (when quale/i stand for “which one” or “which ones”)
- Quale vuoi? (Which one do you want?)
- Quali vuoi? (Which ones do you want?)
Quanto/a/i/e + noun + verb
- Quanto caffè vuoi? (How much coffee do you want?)
- Quanti libri hai? (How many books do you have?)
Exception: Quanto costa/viene? (How much is it?)
Di chi è + noun / Di chi sono + noun
- Di chi è questo libro? (Whose book is this?)
- Di chi sono questi libri? (Whose books are these?)
