This is an excellent book to read if you’re studying Italian. There are exercises and a vocabulary list at the end of each chapter that helped solidify what I’d read. I like that each chapter has a summary in Italian (or in English, for me to translate into Italian!). Each chapter has a different set of exercises, which kept it interesting. This was an engaging story about an American girl in Sicily on her quest to obtain Italian citizenship. Great book for anyone wanting to elevate their Italian learning!

I have been reading great literature in Italian with a dictionary by my side. I can now read fairly well, but am unable to speak at all. It is so much harder to initiate a thought in Italian than to passively read it with contextual clues. These books by Serena Capilli with exercises after each chapter are perfect to bridge that gap. It is like being in a class where the teacher forces you engage that part of your brain used for expression. I have read two of her books and plan to keep using more of them.

Author and Teacher Serena Capilli delivers again with a wonderful short story adventure about an Italian American citizen who is searching in Italy for her father‘s birth certificate so that she can acquire dual citizenship. I really can learn easily from the bolded phrases that are explained at the end of each chapter. There are also questions and exercises at the end of each chapter which enhance the retention of the new material. Serena has an excellent way of writing which captures your interest and concentration so that you are able to learn many new phrases. This is one of the best tools I have found to improve my Italian language skills. Thank you, Serena.

I am a published author and experienced teacher of Italian as a foreign language. I am committed to creating high-quality learning content that helps passionate Italian learners immerse themselves in the language—no matter where they are. My motto is: Learn Italian smarter, not harder!

I took classes with Serena and after a six-month immersion course with her, I passed my B1 citizenship exam at the first attempt. If someone asked me to give Serena a score from one to five stars, I’d give her six for sure!!
