Futuro di Probabilità (Italian Future Tense)

Another Use of the Italian Future Tense

Italian has a special use of the future tense that often surprises learners: the futuro di probabilità, also called “futuro con valore di supposizione”, which means “future tense expressing probability.”

Despite the name, this structure does not talk about the future.
Instead, it is used to express uncertainty, assumptions, or educated guesses.

This use is extremely common in spoken Italian and appears constantly in novels, films, and everyday conversations.

What the Futuro di Probabilità Really Means

This is not the typical use of the futuro semplice (which you can look up here), but a different function of the future tense.

This second use is very common when the speaker wants to make a reasonable assumption about something happening right now or in the very near present.

In English, we usually translate this idea with expressions like:

  • He must be…
  • She’s probably…
  • They’re likely…
  • She may be…

So although the verb is in the future form, the meaning is present.

How to Form It

You simply use the future tense conjugation of the verb you want.

The difference here is not grammatical, but semantic:
the future tense expresses probability, not time (in this use).

Examples with essere (to be)

  • Sarà stanco.
He’s probably tired. / He must be tired. / He may be tired.
  • Saranno in ritardo.
    They’re probably running late.

Examples with avere (to have)

  • Avrà fame.
    She’s probably hungry.
  • Avrete molto da fare.
You probably have a lot to do.

The future of probability is especially common with essere and avere, so it’s a good idea to start by mastering these verbs first.

Futuro di Probabilità vs Forse

When we use the futuro di probabilità, we are often expressing an idea similar to “forse” (maybe).
However, using the future tense is much more natural in spoken Italian, and it carries a slightly different nuance.

Key Difference

  • Forse = random or open possibility
  • Futuro di probabilità = logical or contextual assumption
