What does “Quale” mean in Italian?
In Italian, quale means which or sometimes what, and it’s used when you’re choosing between specific people or things. If you’re ever asking someone to pick from options or give precise information, quale is the word you need.
Forms of Quale
Quale changes depending on number, but not gender.
- qual → singular (used before è, e.g. qual è)
- quale → singular
- quali → plural
❗ Note: Always write qual è (no apostrophe!).

- Quale libro vuoi leggere? – Which book do you want to read?
- Quali università hai scelto? – Which universities did you choose?
- Ne ho due. Quale preferisci? – I have two. Which one do you prefer?
- Qual è la risposta giusta? – Which is the right answer?
What’s the difference between Quale and Che?
Both quale and che can mean what or which in English, but they are used differently.
Use Che for General Questions or Categories
Che is shorter, more flexible, more informal and very common in everyday conversation. Use it when you’re not choosing from a specific set.
- Che musica ti piace? – What kind of music do you like?
- Che lavoro fai? – What job do you do?
- Che lingua stai imparando? – What language are you learning?
Use Quale for specific options
If you’re asking someone to choose or referring to a known set of things, use quale.
- Quale preferisci, il tè o il caffè? – Which do you prefer, tea or coffee?

Use che for general questions:
– Che musica ti piace? – What kind of music do you like?
Use quale when choosing from options:
– Quale canzone preferisci? – Which song do you prefer?
Quale as a Formal Relative Pronoun
In more formal or written Italian, quale (and its forms) can also act as a relative pronoun, often following a preposition. In these cases, it replaces che or cui to add clarity or precision.
Examples:
- Il motivo per il quale sono qui… – The reason why I’m here
- La città nella quale abito è piccola. – The city I live in is small
- La persona con la quale lavoro… – The person I work with
You’ll also see gender/number agreement:
- L’uomo con il quale lavoro è inglese. – The man I work with is English
- Le studentesse alle quali ho scritto non hanno risposto. – The students I wrote to didn’t reply
